Credit Footing

Important disclaimer

Credit Footing is a free matching service. We share general education and, if you want, help connect you with a credit-repair or nonprofit credit-counseling provider.

What Credit Footing is — and is not

Credit Footing is not a credit-repair company, law firm, lender, or financial advisor. We do not repair credit ourselves, give legal advice, or promise any result.

Our service is free for consumers. If you choose, you can use Get Matched to be connected with a participating credit-repair provider or nonprofit credit-counseling organization. You can also leave our site and handle credit steps on your own.

General education only

Everything on this site is for general educational information. It is not legal advice, financial advice, or a promise about what will happen in your case.

Credit rules, timelines, and options can vary by state and by each person's credit file. If you need advice for your own situation, read the provider's written contract carefully and consider speaking with a nonprofit counselor, attorney, or other licensed professional.

No guarantees, no fast-fix promises

No one can honestly guarantee that your credit score will go up, that negative items will be removed, or that results will happen by a certain date. Accurate negative information usually cannot be removed just because you want it gone.

Be careful with any company that says it can "erase bad credit," remove all negative items, or raise your score by a specific number of points. Results depend on your own credit history and often take time.

Your free right to do it yourself

You have the right under federal law to get your credit reports for free and dispute errors yourself at no cost. You do not need to pay anyone to review your reports or send a dispute about information you believe is wrong.

Using Credit Footing or Get Matched is optional. Our role is to help you understand your options and, if you want, connect you with a provider. Whether you do it yourself or work with a provider is your choice.

Important rules for credit-repair companies

If you choose to work with a credit-repair company, federal law gives you important protections. A credit-repair company cannot charge you before the promised work is done. It cannot legally promise to remove accurate negative information.

It must also give you a written contract that explains your rights, and you have the right to cancel within three business days. Always read the contract before signing anything.

  • Do not trust promises to remove true negative items
  • Do not pay upfront before work is done
  • Make sure you receive a written contract
  • Remember you can cancel within three business days

What we collect, and what we do not collect

If you ask to be matched, we only ask for basic contact and goal information: first name, phone number, optional email, your goal, ZIP code, and preferred language. We do this so a provider can contact you if you want that.

We do not ask for Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, full credit reports, income, or dates of birth on our match form. Consent to be contacted must be given separately, including consent for calls or texts that may use an automated system, and your consent is not required to use the site or learn from our information.

In plain English

We are a free matching service, not a credit-repair company, and no one can honestly promise to fix your credit or raise your score.

Common questions

Can Credit Footing fix my credit?

No. Credit Footing does not repair credit. We provide general education and free matching to a participating credit-repair provider or nonprofit credit-counseling organization if you ask for that.

Do I have to pay to use this site?

No. Credit Footing is free for consumers. You can read our information for free and choose whether or not to request a match.

Can anyone guarantee a better credit score?

No. No honest company can guarantee a score increase or promise to remove accurate negative information. Credit results vary by person and usually take time.

Can I dispute credit report errors by myself for free?

Yes. You can get your credit reports for free and dispute errors yourself at no cost. You do not need to hire a company to do that.

Will you ask for my Social Security number?

No. Our match form does not ask for your Social Security number, bank account information, income, full credit report, or date of birth.

What should I avoid when looking for help?

Walk away from anyone asking for upfront fees before work is done, promising to erase accurate bad credit, telling you to dispute information that is true, or suggesting a new credit identity or CPN.
